They are GREAT for gettig fans. Great.

For selling stuff? Absolutely crap. :)

If this is your first foray into paid traffic, I may suggest you tread water in Adwords for a month and see how you do... a little easier to get enough clicks to make sure your offer is good and the traffic will convert.

facebook ads are way to expensive. i use services like http://facebookpromotions.com/ and get fans to my fanpage then just blast them like once or so a day. you get way more for your money if your company or website is worldwide

Bottom line - Yes it is worth it.
But, if you don't sell anything on your Facebook page or you can't direct them to your online store then all you did is just adding another fan..
I can give you 2 important tips:
    - Create a store tab on your FB page! search the word: StoreYa on Google, it's a free store app that goes in your FB page, very easy to use.
    - Don't pay the estimate ad price FB is asking, you can get it for 1/3 of the price, just try it out, and correct it as you go..if they ask you to pay $2 per ad write down 0.50, you'll still get great conversions.
Now, if you created a store tab by StoreYa, and created an ad campaign, all you have to do is direct your ads to your FB store!!:)
    Hope this helps.

I've read different reports about whether the Facebook ads are worth it. Basically, you set a limit per day and you put in a "bid" per click. I think I read somewhere that one of the major bloggers had tried and found that there were very few conversions (i.e. sales) from it. This nice thing about it is that you can try it and see what happens.

EyalR had some pretty solid advice, especially the call to action with the store button.

Don't forget to A/B split test your ads too. Test for pictures (can be huge), text, etc. Also, give something free to your fans (content) that they will like then pitch them. I think it was Frank Kern that mentioned that you should send 2 pieces of content to every pitch. That way you should reduce your unsubs.

I kinda' rambled on this one. Hope the general ideas help you in some way.
