Is it worth submitting to directories?

Is it worth submitting to directories in terms of getting new visitors from those directories? I know that directories have an impact on SEO but because I don't like relying on search engines only, I am more interested in findindg new ways of bringing visitors to my websites.

I have submitted my websites to a few hundred directories, and the amount of visitors I receive from the directories is very low, almost not worth submitting my websites anymore.

I am launching a new website and I just want to know your opinion on whether submitting to directories may send you a decent number of visitors.

To be honest it is a tough go

80% of all website traffic comes from SEs these days. So while you don't have to depend on them... trying to go it alone is probably an expensive endeavor

Organic search is the best bang for the buck..thus it's popularity

Wow. 80% is a pretty high number. I would be very worried if 80% of my visitors came from search engines. That means that (there are few exceptions) the website is not a well established website, visitors are not coming back, other websites don't link to you because they don't like the website.

Most people submit to dirs for backlinks,if you want to get huge traffic from them,it's a bit impossible.

Do you visit many directories when you are looking for a website to buy a product? I don't think so. Try to look at your question from the eyes of the buyer - I am sure you will get a better overall feel of where your traffic is really coming from and into what area of expertise you should pay more attention.

IMO : No... definitely ! .. Even Dmoz doesn't bring any visitor...

Visitors come mainly from forums & search engines...

The main objective submitting to directories is for inbound links. You can try out article writing for better results :)

Article writing for better results, yes. But should those articles be both on site and also submitted to article directories or just one of the choices?

Yes, just submit your site on high traffic directories. Article directories may give a lot of traffic and if you want, Free classifieds may help.

HA... why not Both? Directory submissions AND article marketing

I prefer seperate articles for the site and distribution. I have seen sites actually outrank the clients for the same piece.. not an ideal situation. So I advise 2 articles..one for the site (content building) and one for distribution (link profile development)

    :D

I must agree to you David, I was thinking of this strategy too - using as much unique content as possible on and off the website for both keeping it fresh and with constant link-backs.

Yeah, just make sure you submit to quality directories that will be around for awhile,, that usually means going with paid submissions. Usually established directories have pagerank too that they will pass along.

Quality directories do not have to be payed directories. I am constantly submitting websites for my customers to website directories and article directories that are both free and have a good high page rank, usually above 4.

If you need help, contact me with PM and we can discuss this matter.

In my case, I have site, which is linked from about 300 directories and I get about 10-15 unique visitors from them.

But google indexed about 250 links(PR0-4) and I have PR4 just from links in directories.

Directory Submissions are more important from the link building point of view rather than getting traffic to your site. The key is to submit to either niche related or high PR quality directories for maximum effect.

as for me, it's better if you will submit to directories, it can increase traffic of your site. and also you can do other submissions aside from it. after, there's nothing to lose in doing these submissions ;)

Submitting to a few quality directories is a good start, though don't expect to get traffic from directories.
