I have found a site.... a one word domain, that lists in the top 5 on google for that one word.. the one word is a medical condition that is treatable by medication that is sold on the internet, so finding an affiliate program for it would be no problem , on top of the adsense i would add to it... the term is searched for 2600 times / month according to overture.... heres the problem though... the site right now, is not related to the term... for example.. it's a site that ranks #5 in google for the term herpes... but is a site for a basketball team named "herpes" Is there any point in getting this domain? If i were to change the page, to herpes the medical condition related... would it lose it's SE placement for the term "herpes" or no? You think i should buy the site?
In terms of loosing rank, it may because it's dependent on some things out of your control. If people linking to the team notice the change in content, they may remove their links. That's just one issue. Another is changing the content itself. A mass changing of content can push the site down. You'd have to plan it out, maybe keep much of the content the same for a while, ad some additional content and your ads, and slowly transition. ...btw, the idea of a basketball team named "herpes" is hilarious. I bet they aren't popular with the ladies!
It might be worth buying it, but then as AgentD said, as soon as you buy it and start changing the content, the page rank could well change anyway, however you are probably better off starting there, because at least you have a 'page rank platform' to leap from!
Let the site continue with the existing content! Enjoy the rankings .... Enjoy the Adsense! On top of the page, put a text banner ... "Were you looking for a herpes treatment. Look no further ... Click here". Make it goto a page which talkes on herpes the infection! I emphasized text, because text works communicate more with the user than graphic banners! Abhishek
Before purchasing the domain, you should also check wordtracker.com or other keyword analysis tools to clarify how many people search for the term. Most likey you will increase the sites rankings if you optimise the page properly with medical terms so that google can see the actual niche of the site. Keep in mind, domain is not everything. You can always outrank sites with good seo strategies and link popularity. Don't focus too much on the site name. Maybe find a similar domain name, and build on that. Create value for visitors. Short cuts don't always work.
I forgot to mention, it is just as effective if you create your own domain and add a page about that medical condition. eg http://www.yourdomain.com/keywords-keywords.html Maybe you can try that if the domain is expensive
Eric.Cho: I appreciate the advice, but i'm not talking about just buying a domain. I'm talking about buying a site, that is already ranked #5 in google for a keyword
