Is it worth it?

I made a web directory with a .info domain, is it disadvantaged at all to a .com domain? It wouldn't be hard for me to start a new one over if this is the case, I just made it .info because it was cheaper.

There's no disadvantage except for brandability. However, for PR-wise, they work the same as .com domains.

There are no difference in terms of SEO. In addition, I think .info is great for directories :D

How so? They're both the same. A great directory depends on the PR of the site!

I haven't noticed a difference, but branding is a huge deal, so unless you want to rely 100% on search engine traffic, then you should consider that return visitors will not be as frequent with a .info/.biz/.obscure ending website...

.com/.org/.edu are the best for those reasons

.com is just the most common. when i get an address thats .net or .org, etc... its harder for me and others to remember that and might just think the site went away after getting errors when typing .com

Yes, they are both the same (in terms of SEO).

In my opinion, a great online directory does not depend on the PR... It depends on the content, navigation and how easy it is to the users to find their respective information. That is why I think .info is good for directories as they are mostly information based :)

Note that the primary use of a directory is links and ranking.
It is always nice to put your own link in a higher PR.
However, when you find a PR7 directory with a PR4 category going PR2 sub-category and putting your link in a PR0 page, it is worthless...
People always have the homepage ranking in mind when going to directories but actualy end up in a PR0 document...
A directory is only good to sell links to these people...

Those are for REAL directories that people actually use to search for specific things. I highly agree. Getting real directories Vs. Ones who are just made to boost up PR are somewhat different :p

".info" just seems cheap and spammy

i dont think there would be anything wrong since directory are usually for backlink/PR only

There is no clearcut advantage. I would however suggest that you register both domains, the .info and .com as a competitor may take one of them and run a similar business to yours.

I don't like .infos that much, they are used by black hat spammers due to the cheap price of a .info domain

yeah those are the disadvantages of .info and others. most surfers still have a common thinking of all site should be .com so they might can not find your site if they enter .com
