Is it worth it to buy a domain for 10 years?

I've heard you'll get higher rankings if you purchase a domain over 10 years because it adds trust.

Anyone done this and found this had a positive effect on their rankings?

Why would your contract with a registrar affect your ranking with an independant SE?

It depends if you're serious about the site or not...and how well you develop it.

I've actually owned a domain name for 10 years...I've never thought I would have ever reached that. But heck, at the time, I paid 200 dollars for 2 years back then :)

Search engines use many factors in ranking a site. Length of registration may be one of them but I doubt that it's weighting is significant enough to make a noticeable improvement in your site's rankings. Google is smart, if people start registering sites long term just to get better rankings then Google will stop using that factor if in fact they ever did. Don't expect a 10 year registration to give you site a big boost in the SERPs.

If you're serious about your site, register the domain name for 10 years, even if it's difficult to be really affirmative about of much it would help you, you can be pretty sure that's not going to hurt your site.

Well, if you intend to keep the domain name then there is no harm is registering for 10 years, at least you do not need to worry about it for the period when it is active. This might protect you from price changes and places like GoDaddy offers you a discount for a long term registration.

    Ok, I will finish it.

It does NOT have a positive effect on the rankings.

I have some sites that are our workhorses that we always do 10 years registration with. I don't know if it had any affect. It eemed to have the same ranking cycle in SERPS as all the other sites I have that weren't any more then year registrations. I think it may be a tiny factor but many other things help you in the SERPs

For high traffic developed websites, it is safer to register for the longest duration possible.

I wouldn't waste my money registering for 10 years, only would go for 1 year. You could register 10 domains right now for 1 year instead of just 1 for 10 years. Plus, prices would probably come down as well, so you would end up paying less for your domain over that 10 year period.

If your site has actually been around for 10 years then yes, it is useful. But if you register you domain for 1 year and renew it every year, there is no/little difference.
