Is it worth it Starting A New Directory Anymore?

Would like a few opinions on if it is even worth the time to start a new directory with their being so many out there - It's same same over-crowded story in just about anything today -

It seems similar to the Online Game Market as well - which I am a part of and still growing into to -

I own a registered copy of the PHPld ver 3.xx and have a what maybe a pretty nice url named linksalad.com (nothing is on it yet) - Have not been doing anything with the script since purchasing it -

Like I said opinions would be appreciated - Is a general directory out of the question? - is a niche directory the only way to go? Is there still any profit to be made in this line of business?

The answer is probably to get out there and claw your way to the top like everyone else is trying to ...

    Thanks in Advance,

    Marmbo63 :)

If you have OCD then go for it.

Joking aside, if you have something unique to offer then go for it.

That's a nice domain name, which would be hard to use for any other type of site. However, the whole directory space is oversaturated, and there are probably a lot of other types of site that you would be better off building.

Whether it's worth building one for the amount of effort it would take does depend on your own particular skills. Directories are probably more worthwhile if you are better at SEO and building or installing good mods and spam filters, than you are at writing, content creation, or forum management, for instance.

Funny stuff and good stuff too - Thanks - An0n you crack me up -

I may just set it up and and let it simmer - and come back to it - found a decent template - and surely if a "Free New Directory" post is made on dp - that will get the intial "Base Stock" of directory entries done pretty quickly -

As far as a niche goes? Have not a clue - there are a couple of directories out there for games (online and other wise) - but the url name seems to fit a general directory type..

Again Thanks - and Keep em coming.

    Another Question? (sorry)

How many people throw up a directory and it goes away in a couple of months or a year --- Would the sheer fact that you stay online longer be a boon to becoming successful in the DL trade?

Of course it would be wonderful to make money on a site like this upfront but am not going to hold my breath on that for at least a year or more.

    -Thanks

Concentrate on a niche but make sure it is a niche that has enough webmasters chasing after it.

Try and find something that is pretty unique now but could be big in the future like wii, web 2.0, personal jet packs, oops.

Instead of a niche category you could think of a niche perspective . Listing sites with freebies, sites with pictures, really bad sites, offensive sites.

This is just my 2 pence.

About 50%, perhaps? It's hard to know for sure. I had a look through some old Vilesilencer lists, and came up with a list of 71 free directories that were still on the free seo-friendly lists after 14 months. That was out of about 160 that were listed at that time. A lot of these would have moved to paid or recip-required, of course, but a fair number just get abandoned after the owners lose interest and don't bother to renew the domain name.

Probably a better time 1 year from now, when the directory domains start expiring and the directories number gets cut on half. :D

BTW, if you plan to start a directory on that domain, you can get free hosting for it at www.hostphpld.com ;)
