Is it worth creating a new product spin-off of an exsisting one?

I'm thinking of having some IM/webmaster related scripts and programs created for me at elance. My qeuestion is would it be worth my while to have some products created that are spin-offs of exsisting scripts/programs such as link and download protectors and ad tracking software for example.

What do you think.. is the market over saturated for these IM related products? I can't think of any new unique products so I want to just clone an existing one.

Do you know that the guy that put the little ridges on end of paper clips made more money that the inventor of the paper clip? If you make something better people will buy.

If you're not improving it in anyway then I would expect amazing success, which would lead me to think you're wasting your time if you're not aiming for a decent level of success. I stay away from commodities, but I don't know if the market for those are over-saturated.

I would suggest selling existing ones as affiliates to start with to gather sales information. You could Google it, or check the affiliates section at www.clickbank.com
