Recently I met up with someone over a cup of Starbucks and he is getting out of the domain reselling field. When I looked at his list, there really wasn't much that caught my eye. I did however see a generic domain name that happened to be ten years old. I like it, it could cover a lot of broad topics. I'm really new to the domain side of things and I'm just wondering more or less if the name is worth $175. No backlinks to the site or anything. Just the age.
Spam sites often come and go quickly. For this reason, search engines tend to trust a web site that has been around for a long time over one that is brand new. The age of the domain is seen as a sign of trustworthiness because it cannot be faked. The data is provided by Alexa.com (or Archive.org if Alexa.com does not have data about a site). then, you must know the domain name first and check it before you consider to buy it. if the domain sign of trustworthiness, yes its worth.
I'm new to domain names, not new to business lol. Would be pretty silly of me to post a ten year old domain name when I have the option to buy it on the cheap before I've even decided if I want it. When someone could come in behind me and snatch it up. If I end up not buying it, I will be sure to post it here.
No unfortunately there is no PageRank on the site, and from the looks of internet archives, hasn't been anything done with the domain for some time which really leads me to believe it would give me a fresh start with the domain.
Now another question would be is there a way to tell if this website is banned from anything? Like adsense?
I think age it self will not help much (I affect the ranking bit I guess) and if you have to pay lot for the domain then why not search something similar. If it is a 3 letter domain or single keyword domain I will not invest much on it.
It is a generic domain name that could cover everything. Kind of how like wisegeek.com is set up providing a lot of useful information. I was thinking about doing something like that. And the price is $175
If we were talking age + a little PageRank, I'd be cool with it. Age w/o PR opens the question of exactly how much the search engines care fore it. I think folks overrate the value of domain age. Twitter.com was created in May 2009! The lack of domain age was a non-issue there (we won't discuss their business model, which mostly involves duping CNN into using it). I'd want to see age plus some other value.
