Is it wise to put your articles on your own site

    Hi All,
Up until now, I've always put my own articles on my own site. I've since been told that this is not a good idea because it creates duplicate content, but wouldn't a search engine have the ability to know where the content originated from, purley from when and where it originally crawled it?

    No, not really.

But why shouldnt you put it on your own site also ? At least it will do no harm, you can also write another version of it.

Post them on your site first. Then, after you have seen that the article page has beed indexed by Search Engines, submit it to some article directories.

Or do a rewrite, to make them different enough, and submit the rewrites to the article directories.

I add about 6-8 articles a month to my client's site. I post them first on my client's and wait for them to get indexed then I rewrite and submit to articles sites... work like a charm!

I agree. I am #5 on google for my wildlife figurines site and have always posted my press releases and articles on my site aswell as submitting them. There are even occassions where I submitted the press releases well before posting them on my site.

But I never knew that it was an issue before, until I found this forum and paid someone to do some link buiding for me.

    Cheers

Even if your article is posted on your site first, it can still get outranked by a higher PR site displaying your article. I would suggest that you rewrite articles for article directory submissions. You can simply rewrite your article in a different style (i.e. personal, informational or Top 10 list) so that you don't need to research new material.

Make sure that you also spend time making a good reseource box so that vistors to your submitted articles end up at your site anyway!

Well the answers have been helpful, but I now have another question.

I've decided to not submit the articles that are on my site, but I've been posting these same articles on my blog. Will this be an issue?

Yes on the first. No on the second.

Whoever gets archived by the search engines first for an article will become the Authority Website. If you rewrite your article to put it on another site, the other site will become the authority website for your reconstructed article. Why give someone else your authority status?

Authority status in Google allows your page to be placed above all others when a search will naturally point to your article.

You can create your blog to put your article on your blog. And create a link to your site.

I also post the articles that I write on my site first and then once they are indexed they get added to other article directories other than my articles directory.

I like to start with a very general outline and write a brief article for submission to article sites. Then I take that article and expand it to about double the original content. This isn't very difficult because I intentionally don't go into much depth on the article for the article sites. Then I post the longer article to my site and the shorter article to the article site. In the author section, I say something like, "If you liked this article you might enjoy the expanded version at ...."

This way my site shows up as unique content and I get a link to my new article that will help get it spidered quickly....even if no one else picks the article up.

You could do something similar by writing a long article and then using the Autosummarize feature in Word to condense it to a shorter version for the article sites.

Ah! I didn't know Word had that feature - thanks qwerty100, as the latter process would suit my work

    Thanks
