yes, although it's importance is not so much nowadays but when google gets confuse which page needed to be in high rank then it uses meta tags...

This is only valid when you have tough competition with your competitor.so move on for link building.

I stopped using metatags and use keywords in my titels and H1/H2 headings instead.

    Seems to work better.

I actually have some sites without metatags that rank #1 for some very tough keywords in google.

So metatags might be usefull, but not needed at all to get top SE's rankings.

Use page title, meta description and meta keywords, that is all.

Meta tags are history, they were useful in the 90s, now only meta description is partially useful for your visitors. The optimizing that needs to be done should be on content level, refering to the Latent Semantic Optimization techniques using LSA and LSI for which you can read around the internet. The trick is that search engines are trying to understand the site within its context, without having to look at the meta tags that the webmaster may abuse. For example putting church, priest, etc in meta tags and having a porn site? :)

So, to help yourself, and help google rank you better you should optimize your content via Latent Semantic Optimization instead.

Almost all meta-tags including the "keywords" one's are ignored by most of the SE's. However, the content in "meta-description" tag is shown in your SE result.

Meta tags are thing from the past. I think they have no effect whatsoever in Google.
And if you think that's quite logic.

Meta tags have been depreciated by google but I think that there are other search engines that still rely on it.

Latent Semantic Optimization is a scam and you can achieve identical results by leaving a note for the tooth fairy.

    Not so fast.

TITLE isn't a META tag. Its a header element.

META keyword tag is slightly useful in ranking for misspellings on Yahoo.

META ROBOTS is useful for controlling Googlebot's crawling behavior.

META NOODP takes back control away from DMOZ.

META verify helps you verify ownership for Webmaster Tools.

meta http-equiv="refresh" helps you install redirects on sites like blogspot where 301 redirect isn't possible.
