Is It Safer to Brand a Domain in This Way?

    Hi,

Just wanted to ask you guys what you think about the following concept.

From a legal standpoint, is it safer to brand your website as 'xyz.com' or 'X Y Z'. I'm saying this because 'xyz.com', theoretically, directly refers to the domain you registered, and is therefore less vulnerable to being taken away (for instance by someone else applying for the 'X Y Z' trademark and then taking your domain legally).

Would be grateful for any input.

    Thanks :)

That would depend on what 'X Y Z' represent. It would definitely be best if you promote it as 'xyz.com' if it's general words being used.

Let's say Blue Dot is the name of the site. Since both "blue" and "dot" are general words, it's better to go for 'BlueDot.com'. However I don't think this will be able to give you much trademark protection (allowing you to go after people with Blue Dot in their domain names)... but I don't think your concerned about that.

There can only be one xyz dot com. Since xyz is generic there can be an unlimited xyz+ any other combinations.

IMO, Brand it xyz dot com for the greatest protection.
