is it safe to edit category names and not slug

hello everyone
i m confused in editing the category names of my site,

lets say my category name is

Games
and i want to change it to

Free Mobile games

while the slug for this category is free-mobile-games,and i dont change the slug

now all i want to know is that if i change the name and not slug,will it hurt my site indexed pages and seo? i mean will i get broken links to this category or the link will remain same?

my wordpress version is 2.8

Hello,

The answer to your question is no. When you change a category name what really changes is the "name" of the category and not the url to the category.

Example:

Original Category Name: Online Game
Original URL: http://www.yourdomain.com/category/online-game/

And when you change the category name:

Updated Category Name: Mobile Online Free Games
URL: http://www.yourdomain.com/category/online-game/

i was also thinking same,but wanted to make it sure from other gurus as well,so mean my ranking wont be effecting since urls and everything is same,all that changed is Title of category

 

Yup, it would not affect that much on SEO especially if the category name is very similar to each other.

 

As far as I know, No it doesn't have any impact on SEO when it comes to changing just the name itself.
I have changed my category/post names many times without loosing any search engine ranking. As for posts, i use All in One SEO so it doesn't change anything except the Post Name.

In short, I think it is considered to be safe.
