Are you asking if directory links are worthwhile? If so, I would say yes. If not for Google, they still are effective for other SE's. More to the point, if you can get free one way backlinks, why not?

    dcristo's right.

There's a ton of free directories, and some of them do not require you to link back to them. You get free one-way links this way, plus some traffic, especially if it's your niche directory.

Matt Cutts says Google frowns upon paid links. So I'd make sure the links do not have paid footprints (sponsored, premium or whatever), if you choose to go with paid directories.

Buying a link in paid directory is more valid as it gives some PR to you but the traffic is very less from directories

I think nowdays buying links is only for PR in a directory

It's quality that matters, not quality.

I would look at WHY you are buying a link in a directory. What do you hope to gain from it?

In the end, only YOU can answer your own question. What's best for me isn't what's best for you and vise versa.

Actually Google loves links from quality directories -- even if you pay for them. They trust directories that use editors to review the sites they include. Most of the time you pay for those. One of the most valuable links you can get is from the Yahoo directory -- costs $299 per year. Both Google and Yahoo give you a lot of link love for being listed in that directory.

Before paying for a link be sure it is a quality directory.

Directories can be link farms too. When you consider a directory, look to be sure that the other links on the page you will be added to are all on topic and the sites added are quality sites.

If you are only going to be added to a list of spammed and low quality sites it is unlikely that the link will be worth much. Be sure that the editor of the directory you want to be included in, is really trying to make a quality directory. Then it doesn't matter if it is paid or free (except to your wallet), the link should have value, provided that it is indexed, the pages are not supplimental ect.

I think you can do it safely, because can't know if it is paid or not till anybody complains for it.
