Hey All, I wonder if it is really possible (and I am sure you will tell me here) if you actually can make decent money (not buy a porsche money, but livable) from google adsense and affiliate marketing etc. Or is it a myth that anyone can do it? Do you need marketing and internet skills? or can anyone really do it? I am not hoping to make millions overnight, and I know it can take years to get a site to the top, getting good traffic. I have blogged for 3 years now on a subject and said blog has done very well indeed. With no link building etc. Then I tried to launch a local town forum, which it seems the search engines love, but the punters sadly arent coming. The blog is going strong, but I use it for just one income stream, and thats how it will stay. I am setting up a new more general one, and wonder if its possible to make real money from the internet? I ahve read a lot of posts on here over the last 2 days, and it seems you can from what people are saying. So just wondered if there was any top tips or advice??
You need marketing skills. It's very competitive. Some people make a lot of money - but more people lose money than make any.
do you think its best to find an actual product to sell or build a blog and try to sell advertising space on said blog?
Why not both? If your blog is successful, then you will be able to sell blocks and links for advertising, and also use affiliate marketing and blog about your products (not too often though, or people will go). If you are getting enough traffic then the posts will convert into sales if you put your affiliate link at the bottom. Then reinvest the money you make to make the blog even more successful.
Ironically enough the number of people telling you it's possible for anyone to make a decent income with Adsense bottomed out when Google quit paying commissions for referring publishers to Adsense. Now you tend to see more people complaining about low earnings in what seems to be an attempt to scare publishers away & drive up the bids for ads. It's possible, but people aren't as willing to help you figure out how when they're not getting something out of it. That's the best general advice I can give you.
Hmm well on the new blog, I use google, I must admit the earnings are low, however I put this down to low traffic, and the fact that we are all now to aware of Google adverts, and I think in a strange way people are put of by the sight of them and will tend to avoid clicking on them. So maybe its wise to look at other ways to create income from a site with traffic. I was reading an interesting thread on another forum I think about earning $1 a day from a site, and then building mutliple sites to do this. WHich to me makes sense but at the same time ultimately would take a lot of work.
Can we have a link to your blog please? A lot of the time people wont click the ads, so you have to make the ads blend in a bit more. Change the colours to suit the background colour of your page, and also, more importantly, put the ads in a primary position. For instance, an ad block right at the bottom of the page isnt going to do as well as a block at the top of the page.
Can do in six days when I am allowed to post links! New blog hasnt had much work on it yet, and I have justmoved it to a sub domain so its now blog/ which I guess will put it back a bit in google until it refinds it. Then I need to fill it with content which is hard during the week. And also new blog is also on income, which I guess is very competitive!

Well to answer your question it's not possible for "anyone", you can't expect to have something on auto-pilot and expect it to make money for you, sure you may be able to do this later but initially it's going to take a lot of work, you should come up with goals you want to achieve and set out a plan to do them. For example, a goal is to make $20 from a site and you want to achieve this goal by 12 months time so plan what you will do up to the end of those 12 months in order to make $20 (this is just an example). Although you will likely have low earnings and $20 in my example isn't much, if you use this method then you will be happy a year later when you have extra money. Tempera
Tempera, get real, let it be at least $2k in year, if not $20k, all this possible. $20 it's less than $1/day even poor adsense will do a lot better.
