Is it possible to transfer one domain to another persons using the same registrar?

One of my domains that was registered under Spotdomain.com (redirect to domainsite.com) is registered until 2019. I wanted all my domains to be moved to another registrar but the company I chose, HostGator says if I try to transfer that domain it will reset the 2019 date to 2013 when it adds the 'free year'.

The domain in question is under my old host providers name(which was fine). He also has a ton of other domains in his account and access to the DNS records. So my question is if I create an account with namespot and talked with my former host provider and he changes the information on 'my domain' to my personal information since his hosting business is shutting down(had his personal information on the whois) can I have that domain transferred to my account with spotdomain.com?

If I move it to host gator, I lose 7 years.

What is the resolution there. I would call spotdomain/domainsite however it is not a free 1-800 number. is this possible to transfer the domain to another account under the same registrar? So it is my account, and I have access to the DNS records? and any association with my old host is gone?

I don't think you will lose the 7 years on your registration if you transfer it to another registrar. You could transfer the domains to NameCheap - they are a well respected registrar, and have their policy for this clearly stated here:

    http://www.namecheap.com/support/kn...-my-current-registrar-if-i-transfer-it-to-you

I personally do not like keeping my domain names at the same place I do hosting. It's not really clear to me the situation you have with your old hosting company - did they actually 'register' the names on your behalf?

It is all clear to me now. My host provider registered the domains on my behalf but in his name. the hosting company was run by a personal friend of mine. The registrar he used was Spotdomain.com. I chose hostgator as my host provider. They have fantastic customer service, except sometimes their knowledge is lacking. I worked it out that I will be transferring one domain over to hostgator, it is free after all. I confirmed this 5 times and needed to be renewed anyway soon so yay free registration

I called my old host today, and he said that hostgator is on crack, you do not lose the time you have, you gain a year when transferred. He told me the best thing to do would be to transfer the domain that is about to expire to hostgator. and keep the rest with Spotdomain.com since they do not plan on shutting down any time soon and my domain is not set to expire until 2019. I will get him to put the whois information in my name instead of his, and put a private whois on it.

I really do not mind hostgator, they can get annoying sometimes with the lack of effective communication and their supervisors can be arrogant but we worked it out and I got a great great deal. I will be using hostgator as my registrar because they offer free private whois on new registrations which is what I want. If the hosting is an issue, I will just change hosts, leaving host gator as my registrar.

If that doesnt work, I will do what everyone advises. keep them seperate. But what is a few 100$ wasted on a mistake when I already lost close to 3000$ in 8 years learning this internet market.

    Thanks for the responses

EditL I spoke with namecheap. Not only are they not "cheap" (well maybe if you owned 100's of domains) I own 10. Their support is very very very poor. I had a poor experience and they are worst than godaddy. But that is my opinion. I do not even want to think about them
