Is it possible to protect myself in this situation?

    Hi,

    Here's my situation:

I have someone offering to train me how to develop sites on the internet. Since I will be making a consider profit using his method, he is charging quite a bit. $2000 initial down payment, $20 000 total, which can be taken from profits.

What would be the best method to pay the $2000, so that I'm best protected?
He's also offering the option of a refund until 3 months after. Is there anyway I can use this if he does happen to run?

    Thanks

whoa. 20,000 total for training? How are you sure that you will be making a considerable profit? If you have 20K to blow, i would use it for PPC/landing pages/clickbank affiliate links. you can find all the training you need on dp.

    I don't have 20k to blow, I'd how him 20k total.

2k of my own investment, and 18k taken out of the profit, which he's 100% positive I'll make. I wish I had the 20k :p

Of course you're thinking scam right now, but I've dealt with scammers a number of times unfortunately, but he seems legit. Obviously I'm going to be very cautious before I send him any money.

The only way to really protect yourself is to not pay them any money upfront. Offer to sign an agreement to pay the entire amount out of profits. Yes, this sounds like a scam, and the best scammers are great at convincing you they are legitimate. The "pay the $18,000 out of profits" is likely part of the scam. They only want the $2,000 and aren't expecting to get any more. People looking to make some quick bucks are their target.

There really isn't any great secret to making $20K or even $200K or more - it's just going to take a lot of work and time. Find a niche you'll enjoy working on and be prepared to build a the best site of its kind - a site that people will want to naturally want to link to. I always tell people to be prepared to give it at least a year before expecting to see a good return. If it happens sooner, you'll be pleasantly surprised. The vast majority of people fail because they aren't seeing a quick buck and lose interest. You can make vast amounts of money online, but make no mistake, it isn't a get rich quick endeavor.

If this person doesn't live close to you, a great contract won't do you much good. It isn't going to be worth tracking this person down, suing them, paying legal fees, and then trying to collect even if you are successful in court.

If you're sure he is genuine person make sure to sign NDA and deal using payment service such as Escrow.com.

To avoid scam, you need to know his location . why not call him to confirm some information . It would be more safer if he is in the same country with you .

I have to agree with bobchrist on this. The escrow service is your best bet. Be sure to include in the release that certain things have to occur within a certain amount time in order for the escrow to be released to him.

Thus, you need to confirm the person you are going to work with, get contacts in place (which may mean nothing if the other party is in some obscure country), and agree to use an escrow service.

Worst case scenario, you would be out a few hundred bucks for the escrow service fees.
