Its all about luck really. You may find a domain which in a few years mabey worth loads. Or you may just end up spending loads of renewal fees.

I wouldn't recomend it unless you have alot of money to invest. It will also take a long time to get a profit.

I would say it's a lot harder to make money in this field now than it was a few years ago. Most decent domains were registered long ago and there is a lot more competition now. As unreal said, you will probably need a lot of money to invest in high quality domains in order to make a profit. It's not really a viable business for most people because it involves a lot of speculation and sitting around for a buyer to make the right offer. With a lot of hard work you may be able to find the odd valuable domain but the big boys are usually on to them with their array of expensive, high tech and fast domain grabbing tools.

it all depends on how good your name is and whether you can find someone who wants it enough to pay you a decent price. It is definately getting harder and harder, but people are still making good money from it.

Yes it can be use to earn money.
There are many way to earn from domain.
For example, you can park your domain at sedo and earn when people surf your site.
Other than that, you can try sell link at your PRed domain.

Are these people making money "day trading" good domains or are they scoring the occasional big sell on high-priced domains?

I would approach "Domaining" (buying and selling domains) as only "one piece" to your monthly "income puzzle", and use other methods too (affiliate marketing, selling advertising on your websites, etc.).

There is a guy on eBay that sells an eBook/CD about making money selling domain names. It's a really good book and very helpful. I think if you just search for "sell domains" on eBay, you should be able to find it.

Its definately possible to make money with domain names. A .com will cost you about 7-8 bucks when buying in bulk, sometimes a bit cheaper. Even a halfway decent sounding .com with no history can fetch $20, giving you a 100% markup rate- not bad considering Wal-Mart earns billions per year with an average 4-6% markup rate.

The key to domain flipping is monitoring what characteristic other domains have that are selling.
Then use special sites to find very similar domains.

I try to choose domains that are short, catchy, brandable and include keywords

This should give you a good idea where to start, some domains will not make you any money, but some will and it is easy money.
