Can you really host your website from your desktop computer? If this is true what kind of software will I need to install on my computer?

Yes, you can. You will need a webserver like Apache or IIS.

    Yeah, it is easy.

The easiest way is to download some software like WAMP and just create your own Apache server within windows without having to go through all the technical stuff.

You sure can do it! I did it once, after making my own CRAPPY web server in VB6 - bots found my site and leeched 10s of GBs of files...

How do to it? On Windows? Download WAMP. On Mac? Download MAMP. On Linux? Download LAMP. On anything else? Get Apache...

Then, get a dynamic dns (web address that points to your IP address) from a provider like www.no-ip.com or www.dyndns.org. This will allow you to have a web address like http://yourusername.no-ip.com/

If you're feeling extravagant, you can even buy a domain and in the DNS settings, create a CNAME to point it to your name. Then your web address could be something like http://www.yourcoolwebsite.

    Don't host illegal content!

I believe you can. I know that my son ran his own private server for a gaming site and used his pc. So I would see why not. Just be careful of checking private emails and payment processing services. I hear ports are left open and can be easily accessed by others who want to hack. I can be wrong but thats what I hear,

    Yep,install Appserv.
Then get a account at zoneedit.com and point the domain to your IP. and put the domain to zoneedits's Nameservers at your registrar.
You will need a static IP.
You can also set up mutliple virtual hosts on it and point several domains to your home server.

Thing is the upload speed will be slow depending on how fast your Upstream is.

Your ISP can ban you because your line is not supposed to be used for that. Check your ISP TOS.

Some ISP might blocked the port 8080,so have to use a port forwarder.

99% of the ISPS dont allow you to use your internet as a server/host etc. Even if they dont have limits on there bandwidth, if they catch you your internet will be terminated. And for ISPS like bell, i dont think its very hard to detect servers hosting off of them.

But now lots of ISPS block all those kind of ports , so it may be hard to do. Only way i can think of is somehow encrypting your traffic such as uTorrent does for bittorent downloads threw throttled ports.

It's possible, but if you want to do anything other than cater to a dozen or so friends or just have a development platform that nobody but you uses, don't waste your time.

Man I don't know where you all live but here in Colorado if you use Qwest you can host a website no problem. I ran an online hacker war game site (it was the first of its kind) we had major publicity from securityfocus.com and other security related websites, we where receiving over 3,000 unique visitors per day and the site ran find from our DSL connection which was just 1mbps up and 1mbps down.

Even though I have a VPS and a another shared hosting account. I have 1 website that I host on my home computer. It makes like 20 cents a day. Its a 1 page youtube downloader site.

It was because the script uses PHP5 and my hosting account had php4, but now my VPS has php5 and my shared host has PHP5 now since they upgraded, I guess I'm just too lazy to move it.xD
