:) Well Frankly speaking, i think its possible to get a First page ranking for a real competitive keyword in Google with Pur inpage optimisation with just 3-4 links coming in. But Sorry to say that i will have to use a bit of Black hat... I know its not interesting but i have seen a few sites which are ranking well for keywords which are very competitive on page one with PR3 Total links 7, with 3 PR3 links, 1 Pr2 link. Was quite impressive but when i just opened up his source VOILA ... BLACK HAT... and google First page... and been there since around 2 months now ... So .... Its possible

you can only rank for uncompetitive terms without having backlinks.

    hello,

I would little bit expand this formula:

High no of back links = high RANK

higher no of quality back links = higher targeted traffic

I hope you all agree with me.

    Regard

I wouldn't even waste your time on that one. It isn't even remotely possible to get ranked for a good keyword without backlinks. You could get ranked for some bad keywords though. :D

Seeing as that's about the crux of what they use to function, I would say no.

    Hello,

I agree with your opinion, but back links might change or fall in PR from time to time. You also need keywords to stay on the trail.

Even if your back links fall in rank or just dismiss you, you can still hold a nice SERP with a good keywords strategy. And of course, when you use other techniques like Article submitting, Press Releases and the on page optimization you might need a good keyword strategy.

    Regards

I would love to quote the 30 people who say it's not possible or that its only possible for non-competitive terms or it's only possible with blackhat techniques. Totally wrong, but it really depends on which search terms the developer chooses to compete with & his/her methods of marketing.

A picture is worth 1000 words so case in point (important words blurred to protect the innocent)

Now before I get started, I know there are people who get millions of uniques a month on sites, but this conversation is not about the most popular site ... it's about SERPs without links. I have more popular sites than this, I just chose this one as it was my best, but not only, example.

The example is a totally normal site (non-bh) with ONLY 2 LINKS that show up via the yahoo linkdomain: command. Neither links have much to do with the theme of the site at all. The domain is about 8 months old. The search phrases are not the most competitive in the world but they do yield hundreds of free visitors a month and I'm barely top 10.

This particular site will quadruple in size (uniques) this month ... if it stays on path it will pass 5k next month. Happy days!!!

The moral of this story is do your homework before you build a site. Research is your friend! Why work hard when you can work smart!!!

My point is that there are 100+ factors that go into G's SERPs. One of them (backlinks, PR or whatever) will not make or break your campaign. Internet marketing (SEO is for noobs) is truly an art form. Those out chasing PR aren't doing themselves or clients any good.

Links have their place in the natural order of things, don't get me wrong. It usually comes in to play when you are going after some very competitive keywords (think "buy viagra" here).

And I'm answering a question to the best of my ability, and provided proof. This had nothing to do with dominance at all. I actually thought I was helping.

    Hi,

I have to say that there always can be exceptions or also unique content or just "smart" work.

I support the claim that you have to apply different techniques in order to get high SERP's. It does not have to be back links only. They can help, but there are also other factors that has to be taken into consideration.

Only by applying techniques and without rethinking and finding the best techniques for your site and keywords, yes, back links will not be a HIT.

    Good luck with your work

    Regards
