My openion is that you can never get a high rank withour having back links..

RANK == Quality BACK LINKS

 

It seems almost impossible to rank well for anything with zero backlinks because since you will rank well odds are people will link to your site.

well i personally think that for a good keyword (let's say 3.5 million results) it is impossible to reach homepage in google (1st results page) ... Because, i agree with SKxprt backlinks are very important in ranking good (if not the most important).
But i found this out on "my skin", you can add 100 sh*ty backlinks, and get no results, but adding 10 quality links, from related and quality sites, will surely get you results. So google counts more on quality backlinks than quantity. As i said, that is really my personal opinion...

 

It is possible to get rank without backlinks, if your domain age is very high and your content is fresh.

I haven't read the whole thread but by "Ranked" do you mean your organic rankings or PageRank?

PR requirers backlinks however you can get great organic rankings without a single backlink but it all depends on your content and how competitive other sites are. I guarantee you will get a #1 organic ranking for the keyword query "Get a life or go to the moon" if you register www.get-a-life-or-go-to-the-moon.com and submit a sitemap to google.

If the quality of backlinks is not the most important ranking factor, it would be the 2nd most important one then.

I suggest you to set the priority first. It's not wise to do SEO that are not so effective. Many on-page SEO techniques are so minor these days, especially in Google. Even the quality content is not enough to get ranked high.
