    I personally think its very possible to damage a competitors site with link spamming (scrapebox/xrumer) and other methods... You would be nieve to think otherwise...

    Google have repeatedly said that no incoming link can harm your site for precisely the reason mentioned above - it would be too easy for a competitor to dump you in it.

    Whether you believe anything Google publicly says or not is up to you.
