    Is it possible to build a software directory with any webdirectory script available ?

    A site like download.com, softpedia.com ;)

    If its a simple niche based directory its possible. Something like download.com will require you to either freshly code a script or modify existing script to the limit! ;)

    Ofcourse it's possible, if you build it from scratch :) It will cost you alot of money and you'll have to find a reputable programmer to build it for you. Not sure why you'd want to do that, unless you have some sort of unique idea that won't work with any of the scripts out there.

    I believe more than the category and product catalogue management, download.com has excellent mirror management. You should be able to mod existing scripts to support basic functionality.
