If you have a site that has in its sub sections some of categories listed in a directory is it okay to submit to all of them(the sub section) to the directory?

That’s going to depend on the directory. You will need to read the submission guidelines prior to submitting. Most directories I know of will not allow it.

you can submit to one category only,
and it is not necessary to submit more than one at a web directory...

what is your site related to that is depend but i would say submit to one category and reply to admin/editor by asking that is it ok?

If someone submit their site to more than one category, we don't approve or if we approved one page of that site and try to spam our directory we do delete that site too even it is approve in our free directory (listed in our signatrue)

For paid directory we may or we may not depend on your site but payment require.

Well dmoz allows it and Yahoo allows it so there are two directories which are highly regarded by the search engines which allow for it.

Yahoo may be respected swedal but I'm not so sure on dmoz anymore. That's what puffs dmoz's listings up to the millions because if you check they may list thousands of pages for one site. http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum17/1905.htm That may be an old example though.

Personally I think your right about dmoz JamieG. I did say that the search engines regard them highly. I still think that the google directory pulls from dmoz and google is frequently quoted as saying to submit to dmoz and yahoo . Since google is the most used search engine and they advise to submit there I would say that search engines do regard them highly.

Depends on the submission guidelines of the directory but most of the directories do not allow it.

    Correct.

Many directories will only allow you to submit your domain URL once (no inner pages). So when you attempt to submit that second time you may get an automated URL already exists error.

If it is allowed and if the site is relevant to another category then why not? :)

Go to directorycritic and you will find lots of free directories that allow and approve more than one submission from your website.

You can submit url for more than one time in a directory by using different category links with each one pointing to different pages of your site.

I allow up to 3 listings (must be in 3 different categories) on each of my directories for the same site; though I do request that the URLs be different and take the visitor straight to the section of the site that matches the category it resides in.

Like others have said, it's up to each directory owner. Check out the TOS prior to submitting and hopefully the directory owner has covered this issue.

"you can submit to one category only,"

That actually depends on the directory. There are a number of directories that allow you to submit to more then one category.

I've found a lot of directories say that you can't submit to more then one category but then they approve them anyway.

Plenty wont state anything either, take the risk, your not being cheeky by trying, regarding free ones at least.

I would personally treat it as spam and delete all your listings!

Frankly this is mainly allowed on deep link directories, though an exception could be, if you were submitting a sub folder like forum or directory to forum or directory category.

That might work only for directories allowing those "deep links" you are speaking of.
