Hello All, There is one category with 600+ pages on my site, Now for some reason I have to remove all 600 pages from Google index which I would do using robots.txt. But most of the pages under that category are ranking good in Google and I am planning to implement 301 from all the 600 pages to Home page. Would it be fine redirecting these many pages to home page? Any negatives and positives? Cheers...
If you don't have targeted pages other than homepage to redirect to - then yes, do that. The sad thing is that the user won't get to the content page he expects to, but if you don't have this content anymore - you got no choice...
Can I ask what the reason is for removing those pages? If you really have to remove them, and those pages have inbound links, I would try and find similar pages that might benefit from those links. So if you have a "red widgets" page that you have to remove, and a "cheap widgets" page that stays, you could redirect all "red widgets" inbound links to the "cheap widgets" page. They will probably do more good for your internal page than your homepage as they are more related to the internal page.
