Is it ok to have two separate sitemaps

    Hi friends,

I've a site that includes a blog (blog is in a sub-folder called 'blog'), for my blog I've a plugin that could generate sitemap (only for the blog content) and it could place the newly generated sitemap file into to the blog folder. I'd also add sitemap in the root folder, so I'll have two sitemaps:

http://www.my_site.com/sitemap.xml - contains info about all urls except blog
http://www.my_site.com/blog/sitemap.xml - contains url only about the blog

is ok for the bots or I should move everything in only one file ?

Thank in advanced for all replies :)

Yes in your case to having two site maps are good for you ... beacuse you have the chance to promote site content by showing your regular web page of site map ... and 2ndly you can pormote it as a blog ... where u can post new articles, attract the people and increase the traffic of your site .. god job ..

You can check out my website .... http://www.australiawholesalers.com/ ... this site has two types of site maps ....
one is named as site map and other named as site preview ...

My understanding is that Google only takes much notice of whichever sitemap is in the root directory.

Link them both from a robots.txt so they can both be found with ease.

Or use a sitemap-index file and submit that to Google...

Within the sitemap index, you can link to both of your sitemaps.

Be sure to setup sitemap-index in your root directory. From here it can link to your blog. If you placed it in your blog, you wouldn't be allowed to link to your root directory.

The sitemap-index file is the perfect way to handle multiple sitemaps for different areas of your site.

yep it is ok to have separate site maps,,, google also suggest that if your site map exceeds 100 links you might want to break it into smaller sitemaps..:)

    • Sitemap: http://www.gstatic.com/s2/sitemaps/profiles-sitemap.xml
    • Sitemap: http://www.google.com/hostednews/sitemap_index.xml
    • Sitemap: http://www.google.com/ventures/sitemap_ventures.xml
    • Sitemap: http://www.google.com/sitemaps_webmasters.xml

yea, i have a couple. I used an online sitemap generator, which has a max of 500 links. So, I ran it against a few diff urls, and then have sitemap1, sitemap2, etc. Google is slowly indexing them. so yea, multiples seems to work fine.

Its absolutely ok to have 2 sitemaps. I even submit two separate sitemaps just because of traffic, and sometimes to make the less load. There is no issue to have 2 or more separate sitemaps at all. Unless you annoyed the google spiders :)
