Wow-- I just managed to fit that big question in the box !! This is something that I wonder about. I am a fine artist/printmaker and I enjoy looking around the web and am always excited when I find artwork by someone new, that i like. I have then downloaded a jpg or 2 of this persons work. Made a not of their name ,details about the artwork and their web address. When I then post it on my blog I include all of this info along with the image and usually say what it is I like about it. Surely thats got to be OK ?? I would appreciate peoples thoughts on this as this seems afairly good forum used by sensible and knowledgeable people. hope to hear from you guys Aine in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK
You should ask the owner of the images beforehand, just to be on the safe side. Just because you acknowledge the source doesn't mean you have permission to use it.
Agree with CountryBoy. Alternatively, see if the site is using a Creative-Commons license. If it states share-alike and attribute, non-commercial, then it's safe to use the pictures. However, this etiquette remains: try not to use the original full-sized picture. Instead, a smaller size or even a thumbnail. But understandably, some pictures may not look good if they are small.
Agreed. Don't use the original files. Instead, contact the owner and ask for permission. Personnally, I would even be happy if somebody liked my work and wanted to post it on their site giving me credit.. but you never know )
Yeah, I know a few people who put "download these and die" warnings on their sites Creative Commons though is a huge clue. Also, unless it's something like Flickr or photobucket, I wouldn't hotlink them. That is just impolite
...and dangerous, too. A few years ago some guy was hotlinking to my pictures from his eBay auctions (he was selling the same products). When I replaced the pictures on my FTP by huge "I AM A THIEF" pics, he lost the fight
