    Hello friends,

i came across a site http://www.googlelance.com. It is using the word Google in its domain. Is it legal because from the name it looks like it is affiliated to Google.

    Thanks & Regards

don't answer if you don't know! That domain is an active violation of a trademark, and we all know google enforces it's trademark by suing violators.

Why? Then again, I guess don't answer if you don't know as pitagora said.

To the OP: ditto with pitagora that it's got "trademark infringement" written all
over it. But it's up to Google what to do about that.

Merely having a trademarked name does not in any way violate trademark laws. What causes the violation is the content of the site. In this case, yes, IMHO googlelance is opening itself up to a lawsuit. As you can see, it is similar to what google does. googlelance is a search for designers, google is a search engine, that would be too close of a match.

I would disagree, host. Merely having a trademarked name in your domain is a violation of cybersquatting trademark laws. You have to have non-infringing content to go with that domain. The rest I agree with, though (and I know that wasn't really the way you meant it).

Just the domain - cybersquatting, trademark infringement
domain with confusingly similar products, services or some other content that would lead people to believe there was a connection between the trademark holder and the website - trademark infringement
domain with unrelated products and services - not infringement
