Is it legal to open social networking site like facebook?

    Hi, I'm new here. I want to buy socialengine script to run a social networking site (has funtionalities similar to facebook). Is it Legal?

    Obviously its legal you are not stealing their code or something

    It's legal but you have to careful not to represent yourself as being affiliated with facebook... i.e. Saying... JUST LIKE FACEBOOK. Try twisting the focus of the social network just so that within a court case you have something that differs you.

    Copying the functions of the site is OK as long as the script does not use Facebook's copyrighted or proprietary code. Copying Facebook's design elements so that your site looks like Facebook may violate Facebook's copyright in its design, though the design is so minimalist that one might question whether there is the required level of creativity in the design to even merit copyright protection.
