It is illegal for you to run a copy you download. It is not the same as a backup. Also must peer-to-peer networks make you upload while you download. This makes it even more illegal.

Just go get the real thing from MS. I think you can have MS send you a disk for about $10 (+shipping).

Well at least in some countries. I think it depends a lot on the place where you live?

it's not legal to do it, when downloading a torrent you share what you have downloaded with other people so even if you do own a copy do you have copies to give away to all those people that are downloading of you?

I've done this before, my restore CD was so scratched it would half restore then die with read errors so I had no choice but to find a copy of Windows XP, I was going to borrow a friends CD, but I didn't have the time to go asking around for an XP CD so I just downloaded an XP torrent and instead of using the key they provide etc.. Just installed using my code on the side of the PC and it worked fine.

It is illigal. it is unauthorized copying of the windows xp software.

It is Legal to get a original copy of XP and install it onto your machine with a certificate on it.

Torrents are normally 99% fine (in terms of virus's ect.) to download but they are just like burning a disk (still unauthorized copying)

:p I know what im talking about. Dont listen to people who say its legal cause it ant.

But seriously no one would know its upto you to make the choice. downloading from private trackers is alot safer than a public site.

What do you think I used to initially ask this question, Ubuntu "breezy badger". I love the idea behind linux and the fact that its free but in the real world all I care about is being able to install what I want easily so I can spend my time working instead of figuring out how to do simple things like open a .exe or installing a flash plugin to firefox, with windows all this done "magically" and truthfully I dont care to know everything about my OS's framework, I just want it to work for everything 99.9% of the time.

Downloading anything which requires you to purchase it, is illegal even if you have a valid license key. (As i have been told)

Really when you buy Windows your buying a license to use the software, so your just downloading the software so you can use the license you have legally purchased.

And from what I remember when I tried to order a replacement disk it costs for the disk and for the postage from Microsoft. But then again this was back in the days of Windows 98, but I imagine it would still be the same.

I sell software, and if someone downloads my software from an alternate location to install using a legit key I see no problem. However I could be greedy and make it part of the licensing terms that you must use a disk/software provided by me, so if you want the disk its going to cost ya $$ plus postage.

Anyways heres info on obtaining a replacement..

    It's perfectly legal...
Ask them in case you have any more doubt... They'll recommend dling from their servers as torrents may be edited or packed with malicious files.. Happens all the time..
