Is it important to use <h1> </h1> in heading?

I wonder if it is important for your SEO to use the tags <h1> and </h1> to define the heading in your target page. Is it just as meaningful to use something like <font size=5>The heading</font> to show Google that this is the article's heading?

Is it also a cleaver move to use something like a <h6> tag to define the subheadings for google?

<h1> is very important. Is it better then <font size="5">? Imo YES.

Remember you can CSS your H1 tags to look good on your site.. also the closer they are to the top of the page the better, so if you have a left nav bar that is showing up in your HTML before the <h1> in the body of the site that isn't a good and making sure the H1 tags shows up as close to the <body> tag as possible.

of course it is, because when you use that, you're telling Google and other SE's that the <h1>Words here are relevant</h1> so if you're onto optimizing, you should put h1 tags on your major keywords. also use other h tags. It is different from font size.

<h1> and <font size="5"> will not give you the same effect on seo.

you must <h1></h1> tags for the most important parts of your web page

I only use H1. I would like to know too, if H4 etc. are important too.

I am thinking that it is smart to also have your keywords placed in one or to subheadings. And using H4 etc. would indicate a subheading.

Ok, here is something that will help you out in the future:

You should use only ONE <h1></h1> header on 1 page. You can use multiple <h2>-<h6> tags, but only one h1 tag.

Also, for beginners: <h1>-<h6> are not used because by default the text is larger. The style of any element can be changed via CSS.

sorry for asking such a newb question, but i am assuming H1 tag does not affect the page rank at all? or is there some indirect relationship?

if your page has a heading then use proper heading tags.

the only thing that affects Page rank is backlinks.

Search Engine Optimization and body text

Title tags and alt attributes are good to have for keyword density, but I wondered whether they were as good as body text? Is it still better for SEO to provide some actual body test that uses the words and include image-based keywords as well?

    Form: Natasha Jolly

Dave Chaffey: Success in SEO is down to knowing the ranking factor that matter most to the search engines, and then implementing in a way that ensures the site is still usable for human audiences – we need to avoid SEO (search engine over-optimisation).

    OF the factor you’ve mentioned, their order of importance is follow: <title> tag (keep then focused on two or three key phrases only); the body copy (particularly toward the top of the document);

Then image tag alt attributes (these are most important when it’s an image that links elsewhere).

For the other on-page factor, I would also recommend including key phrase in headings <h1> and <h2>. Finally, do remember that off-page factors, in particular the link anchor text and content of page linking to the page you are optimising, are most importance of all.

You should also try to keep the text in H1 tags slightly different from the title tag and the META description. I prefer keeping H1 shortest, then Title slightly longer and Description a little more longer.

You should certainly use H1, H2, etc. Just use CSS to set the style. Apparently it's good to use <p> over <br>, too.

seems like everyone agree that H1 is important.
However, its debatable if H2 to H6 is important as some of us dont seem to use it???
