Is it illegal to remove the script developer's link from the footer? The publishing software i use comes under GNU General Public License.

On most cases, it is illegal. It is under GNU license but that doesn't mean that you have full control of the script, there are some who allows you to for a certain amount of money and there are some who really doesn't care about it.

If you are being granted a conditional licence by the developer (that you include their link) than removing it means that you would technically no longer be using it legally. That said - I don't know enough about the technicalities of GNU to give any advice on how that would impact.

Most likely would be illegal. Chances of being caught if you take it off... low. Chances of anything more than getting an email.. even lower.
