Is it illegal to copy someone's article? Need Fast help!

I am launching a site soon, complete with blogs. I am about to start writing articles and such...

But question is simple. Can I copy an article from someone's blog if I give complete credit, provide a big link at the top of the page to their site, and cite everything? Is there a problem with that?

    Thanks!

Not legal. You would need permission to repost.

Most articles comes with repost rights only if you'll mention the authors names and place a link to his website

I had full intentions of citing the article. I never would not.

So with citations, I still need to get permission.

Yes, you would still need to get permission. Many websites do this illegally but it's not worth the risk.

It is illegal, but you are looking a private lawsuit for monetary damages and injunctive relief, it is not likely you would do jail time. A lot of internet copy has been published for the purpose of exposure and is made available for redistribution with some conditions attached including naming the author and their website.

I think the Article has to be copyright'd for it to be illegal.

I would not use the word illegal. It sounds like someone robbing a store.

Having said that, you do not have the right to make a full copy of an aryticle on a website, whether it carries a copyright statement or not. Copyright is automatically earned in the creation of an article.

Copyright enforcement is the responsibility of the copyright holder and not the responsibility of the state or the police force. Though gross copyright infringment -- such as knock offs of a manufactured product -- may be covered under laws and is "going to jail" illegal.

You should always seek the permission of the original copyright holder before using material published on another website.

Exceptions may be when material is made available under a Creative Commons copyright or the so-called copyleft. Exceptions may also be explicitly granted by websites. They will be contained in a usage statement and/or in the specific document. They will also state how you may use the document.

Whenever planning to copy an article on your website, look for its copyright note. It may allow you to republish it without informing the author, as long as you keep the credits on. Others require contact. Some may clearly prohibit copy so contacting the author in that case may turn to be a waste of time.

When in doubt, contact the owner in question. They are the best source for a question such as this.

100% agree. If someone asked to copy my original content, but cited my site and gave a link, I would tell them go ahead.

If they copied and cited WITHOUT asking, dmca to host & google. There's a general rule in copyright infringement: unless you have permission, you don't have permission!

If the same article appears at so many places, it may be flagged for dup content, then your site loses rank.

When citing articles during essays, it is NOT necessary to contact the article author of the publication. All you need to do is cite the article (Name + bookname + pagenumber) and give them credit on the works cited page.

So it would be acceptable to me to give a link the author's name and a "contributers" page.

Also, for it to be "illegal", it would have to be copyrighted, which most sites are NOT.

All articles become copyrighted the moment they are written.

It's simply easier to enforce copyrights if you register them.

Definitely illegal (unless the article has a declaration of public domain or free use). But here is a suggestion: I get what you are trying to do. So, instead of picking up article arbitrarily, go to an articles directory such as ezinearticles.com or articledepot.co.uk or whatever and pick articles from there using the required attribution and links. That will give you tens of thousands of articles to choose from.
    Thanks

"Citing" an article is not what the guy is talking about, nor is this an academic essay.

Not if you're copying an entire article verbatim.

All sites are copyrighted the moment they are put up so you're 100% wrong on that statement.

If you provide a paragraph and a link and credit to his site it is ok.

However copying a whole article is wrong even with a backlink.
