Is it illegal? I'm scared!

    Hello,

I am a 14-year old man. I sold a site to a company. And after weeks or a month, I created a site with the same concept of the site. Or a somewhat a rival of the site I just sold. Then, they contacted me that should I work with them or close my latest site? They said it is illegal and they are preparing now two lawyers for that! I am really scared and its really unfair because I don't have any lawyer and I'm not that rich to go against them. But I have this feeling that it is not illegal, I haven't signed any single contract with them, ever! And the other option, work with them, was really suspicious for me because are they just scaring me or what?

I'm not sure about this. Because I am just new and young in this industry. Can someone explain it to me? Is it illegal or not? I need your help DP'ers!

    Regards

Did you sign any non competition clause or something to that nature when you sell the site?

BTW you are 14 yo, there is nothing they can do to you.

    Hi,

No its not illegal to create a site of the same nature unless one or both of these things occured.

    1. When you sold the site you signed a contract stipulating that you would not go into the same business as them (normally for a set period of time)

    2. You are not using any copyrighted information your sold them on your own site, i.e. custom themes, content etc..

If its none of the above your fine. :)

Wrong forum, but anyway. They might just be scaring you. I did a similar thing with http://www.stickified.com and http://www.mysticky.net, and I got off ok. As long as the concepts are not protected in any way, you're ok I think.

Why not ask for some information as to which laws they are claiming you have broken..?

I have no contracts with them. Not a single one.

Yes, i am 14. But my online informations need to be legal. So, I used my father's. And if its really 'illegal', my father will be jailed.

Anyone can use your dad information to do things online and anyone can use mine. It doesn't mean that I have to be accountable to what they have done.

You are 14, there is nothing they can do to your dad, and there is no contract.
Don't have to worry, but please be honest in the future and do not use false information.

The buyer is probably a 15 year old bully and doesn't have money for lawyers either, lol

Sounds like they are scared your site will do better than theirs.

As long as you aren't using any of their intellectual property or violating a contract, you should be alright.

If they offered you a job, then they are probably bluffing, but I am not a lawyer. You can always call a local lawyer up and ask them their opinion of the situation (to be safe, this is probably the best idea).

As for 'intellectual property', if you sold a site which had your original content to them, it would probably have been better to have a contract drawn up, in order to protect yourself (and apparently, your dad).

Frankly as a 14 yo, you have done very well, keep up the good work and do not let bullies scare you. But I would advice you to keep to the straight path, be aware of work and corporate ethics and I think you will go far. What you have done is not illegal but it isn't very ethical.
