Is it good to use expired domain traffic?

Does anybody know or has had any success with directly buying expired domain names and then using a 301 redirect or something so that you can get the traffic from that domain name and redirect it to your site.

For example, you would buy expired domains from sites that use to be game sites and then you redirect them to the games part on your site.

    Does this work?

Also, would it be dangerous to do this because you will start having quite a few domains directing to your main website. Could it damage your search engine rankings or even get you banned for doing something like this?

Let me toss a logic bomb in your direction.

If a domain has a lot of traffic, do people normally let it expire?

When you reach a conclusion to this query, you'll have the answer to your original question.

Yes, some people do let domains expire when they are having something like 100 pageviews a day and things. They just feel that they can't spend anymore time with the domain and their site or they just don't know how to make money from it and just leave the domain to expire. Even if they were not getting much traffic, think of all the backlinks that could be pointing to that domain name. If you do a 301 redirect to your homepage then I guess you will get the backlink benefit.

The thing is, I wouldn't know if this is bad doing this and against Google guidelines.

    What do you think.

This is something that I most probably will not do, but I am just wondering as it came in my head the other day..

    Thanks!

Yeah - we get it - how many times are you going to post that?

If you want to make a statement, go ahead and make it.

I've picked up a few expired domains for my hosting company, one domain I received about 50 hits the first night but its starting to slow down a bit. The other domain has brought in about 30 or so hits in 3 weeks. Not great but for $8/yr its not bad.

I too am worried about the SE's views on many domains pointing to one thats why I stopped buying them since I haven't found a answer to that question yet.
