Write however long it takes to clearly explain the idea you're trying to get across. No more, no less. (in my opinion)

Doshdosh's article is almost always very long. But still it has quite a lot of readers. Whether it is long or not is never a problem, as long as you can make the entry interesting enough to be read.

A good point to remember is to always make the entry scannable, i.e. with bolded keywords

    Just my 2 cents

Don't go on and on with a point if you want to have a long article so that you will not bore readers. On my blogging tips blog, I tend to write with over 1000 words for my articles but I try to provide as much value as possible.

I wouldn't worry about the length, more about staying on topic. (Unless your blog's audience is looking for bits and pieces combined into one post.)

It depends on your reader, I think. For A-list blogger, short post.. like a link and one sentence of comment sometimes is fine but that's definitely not for most of us.

Quality matters a lot. Shorter post is less useful if it is just rehash of what's already out there (links to news and snippets of it, etc.) but longer post is not always of good quality too.

You know what I mean. :)

All that matters is your post is clear and concise. If it means the post has to be 1000 words, so be it.

Looking at it from an SEO perspective, if you're trying to target keywords (and not social traffic) longer posts allow you to use your targeted keyword more without appearing like you're attempting to 'stuff it'.

Longer posts are also great for getting hits for more long tail terms.

Are you aiming for a flagship blog or a niche blog?

I think it depend on the post content it self, if it's really interesting , useful or something new, i don't mind to read the whole post, but if it's just a general idea, make it simple and straight to the point.

i write super long posts on occasion, sometimes it's just good to let it all out...depending on what your blog/site is about.

Clarity is definitely great too, and sometimes clarity in thought and words can be done concisely.

I think those posts are too long. Try to write posts 200-300 in words.

Well, it all depends on the topic. But if you're writing in depth, you should write as much as you want or as short as you want. If it's good and interesting, I'm sure no one will complain as they read the entire post.

For instance, if your blog is about marketing and you write a clear detailed explanation on how to do it, I'm sure EVERYONE will read it because it will help them.

Long posts are good but break it up into manageable chunks on the page so that some wont look and think its too long, present it in a way that makes them want to read the next part and stay to finish it.

For a blog, the best to decide whether long post are better or small posts score, put urselves in the shoes of the reader and then decide.
Visit any blog which has long posts and try to read the posts out there. Then whatever modifications u suggest, apply the same to ur blog as well. :)
