is it good to get link from unrelevant sites???, i'm still a beginner in SEO and i'm really confused about this problem. Thanks for answering..
It wont really help. You should stick to getting links from relavant sites as they carry a lot of weight. Also if they come from a related site, you have the advantage of getting some traffic. Too many backlinks from irelevant sites look spammy.
i don't think irrelevant sites will help much at all, it could actually hurt--especially if they, themselves are spammy sites. you'll probably get penalized by the SEs rather than gain any benefit. Plus, what nucleus99 said, you won't really get traffic from sites that have nothing to do with your niche.
From the word itself "unrelevant" "irrelevant" or whatever... its obviously gives you irrelevant things... USELESS.. so better think of something practical and Useful if you're gonna be promoting your sites.
Links from relevant sites are 10 times better than irrelevant sites. Advantage is you can get a real visitor referrals.
It is more effective when the links are on relevant websites as yours, otherwise links may be ignored by Google.
I'm not a seo expert, but have linked unrelated clients' websites back to my own web design site (NOT the blog in my signature!!) and it's a pr2 largely because of this and at the top/towards the top of the serps for key terms.
I've been curious about this too. For instance, what about websites that belong to a very specific niche without any good high quality do-follow forums? Would you be wasting your time if you became an active (and rule abiding) community member at a forum such as this one?
It all depends of how google view the site that you are getting link from. Sometimes if you get links from unrelevant sites but with hig Page Rank google will definetly give you a good score. There are lots of factor at play here. But if you get liknks from Low PR sites and are not relevant then google will not count them.
hmmmmm. your answer reminds me of something Justin. Maybe we should consider it this way... bear with me here. If anyone is familiar with Adwords and the google Quality Score I think it might be something a bit like that. Part of why the Quality Score exists is so a user can't dump money into their campaign and instantly succeed. In the same way, Google prevents people from simply dumping money into a linkfarm and instantly boosting their rank to the top. The Algorithm functions as a safeguard to protect Google's relevancy. SO as JustinWilliam suggests.....the websites (such as this one) that are moderated and aren't full of spam are seen by google as 1) more relevant BUT the high rank that the sites been given is essentially a thumbs up by the algorithm that says "The links here are O.K. to index". So maybe we can think of high PR sites in the same way we think of pay-per-click quality score. Hope that made sense.......
It's always good to get links from relevant sites. However, getting backlinks from irrelevant sites won't hurt your ranking.
Yahoo! Site Explorer shows links to my sites from other irrelevant sites, and if that's what they use to calculate my position in the search results then yes... it counts. However Google is a lot smarter and although they can't penalize you for irrelevant links they can ignore them.
I don't think it will help you much to get unrelated links to your website. Concentrate on building related links to your business or website on pages with low outgoing links for the maximum seo benefit.
thanks for the info.. i don't want my blog to get banned just because i get many links from unrelevant sites.... but wait... i see a lot of bloggers put unrelevant links in their signatures... (travel sites, movie dowload, etc) ????????
All backlinks will help. The niche won't do much help. in fact its better if you can get backlinks from varied sites.
I am no SEO expert either, but if experience is anything to go by, it does seem that backlinks from varied sites can and does help. Although you are likely to get less traffic from an unrelated site.
Think about it this way: If you got a link on a PR8 page of an authoritative website which mentioned your URL in passing with no on-page content relevant to yours, what do you think is the most likely scenario: a) Your rankings would drop b) Your rankings would stay the same c) Your rankings would improve Hint: Relevancy is way overrated (although if all your backlinks come from irrelevant sites and they look like non-editorial links, you could be in trouble).
With the new caffeine update in the works, these type of unrelated and spammy links are getting penalized more. The actually use to help and that is why people did them. Now the Google algorithm is cracking down on these types of links so they are getting less and less credit as time passes by and can actually harm your rankings these days, instead of improving it.
