Is it good practice to use a same article in different directories?

Is submitting same article in various article submission sites is a good way?
What is the best way to popularize an article?

    Yes this is fine, and will ensure you get plenty of exposure to your site. There are several things to remember with doing this;

    1) Ignore anyone that says your site might get penalized for duplicate content, this is INCORRECT and it will not happen, see here for more information

    http://www.im-wizard.com/clearing-up-the-duplicate-content-myth/

    2) Google says it will only index one version (you want yours indexed) so be sure to send some backlinks from the article / author resource to your own site AND the original article (if you intend to use it on your site, which you should do). Of course, it may also help if you slightly rewrite the article title, and the summary/intro but this is not essential as there are plenty of exact match articles out there that are indexed multiple times. Things may change in the future which is why i suggest changing it slightly though.

    3) Once you have submitted your article to the article directories you are using, go and add some easy backlinks to them, such as social bookmarks; while they are not great on their own, they will serve their purpose here. If you use something like BMD, you can just pass your author RSS feed and let it do the rest. To make things look more random, you might want to pick a couple of other authors and submit a percentage of articles from their feeds too

    4) Also consider submitting your author XML/RSS feed (if the site has them) to some of the many directories for them

submitting the same article in different article directories provide you back links through different directories/domains, which is good for back links improvement. But not all the article directories take duplicate content. So, first submit your article in popular directories which take original content like ezine or buzzle and after that you can submit in other directories

lukeg32 has provided your answer in detail.
What i'd like to add is, don't submit the article to any article directory if you have already submitted it on your own personal website/blog.
Spun variations are preferred to be submitted but they may not always be accepted.

I couldn't agree more. It doesn't matter what internet marketing forum you go on, if you mention posting the same article to multiple sites then someone will flip out about duplicate content.

Duplicate content only has effect if you post the same thing multiple times on your own site.
Posting the same thing on multiple sites is called syndication, it can be a good thing.

You're going to get differing opinions. The simple answer: Google doesn't like duplicate content no matter what it is! Your articles won't rank as well, and your backlinks won't have as strong of link juice as if each article was unique. The solution: outsource to a company that can handle the uniqueness side of things for you. I work for an SEO company and I'm a consultant, there are some tricks in the industry that can really speed up the process.

If you're too lazy to create original content, maybe you should at least try an article spinning software to freshen up the content for each site. I agree with Swiftly about the diminishing backlink value from duplicate content.

I used to hear lots of suggestion that submitting same article to different article directories is good, but I also heard more and more people talking not to do this. I'm looking forums for an answer because I'd like to perform this same process by using different slides/pdf file directories, such as docstoc, slidershare,scribd...etc. But from most of people are talking/discussing here, it seems to be okay. However, as this trend is going up, I think someday maybe the rules will change, because if I'm a user to search info from the web and keep getting the same article/slides, then, I won't tend to do more searches from this search engine, I believe Google thinks this as well. so I think this will change someday (just my thoughts) :)

that makes a lot of sense.
we all have made searches about precise subjects and only find duplicates or pages built on the fly from the keywords used by previous visitors
    highly annoying! google knows that

Your point number 2 is incorrect. Here is how I know. Somebody stole one of my articles. When I tried to submit it to EA, they flagged it and sent me a link to who stole it. I Googled the article title and my article was listed twice on the first page. Go figure...both sites were listed.

That is not advisable since Google checks if your articles are unique, spinned, or duplicated.

choose a top ranking article site and do your research on the site. That way, you don't have to worry about having to submit lots of times. Also, avoid using any types of software to do postings - it only leads to bad things!
