Is it good news to see lots of spiders?

    Hi,
I have a website that is approaching three months old. Traffic has been fairly scant and the previous maximum viewing I had was about six weeks ago which was 14. I guess they were spiders cos i am in the sandbox. Some of my keywords showed up on google about two weeks into launching the site only to drop out of the top 500 completely. A lot of my keywords are competitive so I am willing to be patient.
However today after making some minor changes to the site removing a lot of irrelevant text description based on advice from some web experts. (about two weeks ago). Then today i observed a surge in traffic the maximum number came up to 57. I guess over 90% of them were spiders. the number then flunctuated between 28 and 52 for about one hour.
My question is this is this a good sign that my pages are gradually been indexed. Unfortunately I am unable to tell from which search engine they came from.
Has anyone here experienced something similar and what should I expect in future?

What stats software are you using that doesn't show you what search engines they are?

I've got vbseo and sitemap generator but cant figure out how to check it yet. I've just sent them a mail to tell me how to go about it.
