Their memberlist shows 2 956 601 user ID's. I am pretty sure they aren't lying about the traffic and the alexa seems correct.

The answer to #1 and #2 are probably the same... "Because they don't need to do anything different."

They have a large enough userbase that they aren't not looking for search engine traffic, so who cares how spiderable it is. The users that need that forum know about it already.

Yes and there and there is one more clarification of point that phpBB is unstable compare to vBulletin.

and the fact its heavily modded would make me wanna think twice about changing anything.

plus if he/she changed now all old post urls etc would return 404 errors for both user and Search engines, all old bookmarks would also be outta date.

I would say that the stats figures would be close to accurate as they are running the Tribal Fusion ad-network and they are picky about who they let in.

You guys are funny. Gaia is the #1 forums and has been for quite some time. The owner of the site has posted many of his changes at the phpbb site. Most are really just to change the search engine and the order of queries. It just goes to show that phpbb is just as powerful as any other software. With VB he would need a license for every server. Also when they upgrade he would need to follow them along. Basically his forums is based on phpbb but really it's evolved past it. Mine is about the same. I have 4 forums based on phpbb but with tons of my own personal changes. I just use their updates as a guideline for what I may need to change.

Gogaia doesn't care a rats ass about serps. You realize he gets so many posts in a day that a serp couldn't ever index them all anyways!

Those numbers are real. half a billion posts!!!! That's a damn search engine in itself. No one even comes close to gaia.

Just to clarify, you don't need a per server vBulletin license. Their licensing is per forum, regardless of how many servers that one forum spans.

You see, they have a lot of people mainly because of the fact that it's targeted toward little kids and kids are always into stuff like that. Another example is Neopets..
