is it even worth creating a directory anymore?

I've had a directory that is 90% finished, just sitting on my server, and have never gotten around to completing and releasing it. I'm wondering if it's even worth my time to bother doing this? Do they make any money, either from subscriptions or from Adsense?

I'm trying to lessen the number of things I have to "babysit" every day, and was wondering if I should put more of my efforts into making a new blog site instead.

If you are not planing on putting a few thousand of $$$ into it, it is probably not worth it.

    From Adsense forget it

From subscriptions yes if you are prepared to work very hard for the best part of a year plus invest in quality back links to get your directory ranked

Babysit is not the word, it takes a lot more than that

Stick to a new blog site instead :)

You can make money from a directory but you have to work just like any site mate. you wont get much straight away and your directory has to have some good functions. make it unique and offer a good service to the internet and you will do fine. hope this helps...

I think directory business is like any other business. You can certainly --earn good money from them if you put in a lot of hard work and good amount of $$$.

Is not it true for all business ? So its upto you to decide. But remember --like any other market this market too is very competitive.

Everyone above is pretty much bang-on, you will need to invest time and money to make your directory a success.

There are simply too many directories right now and if you don't have the resources to make it stand out then you are probably wasting your time.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think it might be more worthwhile if I use that domain name toward something else (what - I have no idea) :)

Invest - break even - make profit, is the normal business mode and I see my directories following this. Not from adsense though, from submissions.

Adsense is a waste of space for directories, sell banners or place your own up.

    Hello...

If you think that you will build it and they will come....
then your in for a rude awakening...
Your directory will have to have some PR or you will have to promote it heavily like chriss (Alive) does with all his new directories which will in the end cost a few bucks depending on how and to what extent your promotions will be done.
    As for autopilot directory ....
mmmm dont think so..... as its Not only a labor of love but with the market as saturated as it is with directories yours will have to be as good or better then the next guys whos competing at lower review prices.

Now dont get me wrong but it can be done but you will have to invest time and $$ for your directory to be a success here and abroud.

just my 2 cents they are free :p

    thx

i think there is definitely alot of potential in directories, but just like any endeavor, success or failure depends on lots of factors and time. If you think u r interested in this sector and have the patience and energy to go the distance, then take the plunge!

o/w your blog may yield more immediate results..... ;)

Of course it is good... but only if you do it right:

    1) don't copy everyone else's template
    2) don't look like everyone else
    3) don't do the same old s---

Be different, Be bright and creative (but that doesn't mean flourscent colors and blinking widgets).

that's not true.... general directories have lots of scope and prospect as well. if managed properly, general directories can easily overdo niche directories and some.

I'm just wondering. Does google, still give importance to or favor sites that are linked to directories?
