Is it better to optimize the homepage first or an Internal page?

I'm just starting SEO for my arcade and the keyword I have chosen for my arcade is very competitive. But Some of my arcade categories are less competitive but bring around the same amount of traffic. So is it better to optimise my homepage for my keyword or 1 of my internal pages for a keyword first?

Hope this makes sense thanks HydroJohn

homepage should be the first then you could build some back links for the internal page after doing that.

Targeting your main keyword is what you shoot for long term. In the meantime, focus on SEO for long tail keywords (internal pages).

So 1 guy says homepage & 1 guy says Internal pages, Great :D

The internet page is already ranked no#18 so with a bit of work I coould get into the top 5 within 1 month.

Then should I work on the homepage or the other way around?

I will be using exactly the same link building methods for both will this affect my SEO?

we all have our own strategies on how we do the optimization of our own sites, if we want the homepage or the internal to be optimized first etc etc, right?? For me, it is actually the HP first before doing the internal pages...

The homepage of a website would hold greater strength than internal pages so IMO it would be better to get the home page optimised first, especially if the keyword you are optimising for are the main website keywords. Obviously if you are trying to optimise and get visibility on a more niche keyword, e.g. a specific product, then concentrate on that page.
We always start at the top (homepage) and work down (through internals)

Definitely optimize your homepage or landing page - the page you want your visitors from organic traffic to see first.

That should be a priority when it comes to on-page SEO :)

I normally start with titles and descriptions for the most important pages, so start with the home page i.e. do all the seo on that page

Then look to your inner pages, you should always see your homepage as a long term goal to get your "golden word" ranked. So its better to get the long term on site work out of the way.

The homepage is usually the first page to rank and is sort of the backbone of the site. Use the best volume/least competitive broad keyword for the homepage and work on it till it ranks in the top three result pages for the keyword, then move onto other pages,

Of course while working on SEO'ing the homepage add more content to the site...

Ok SO I will work for 1month on my hompage, then work another month on 1 of my Internal pages.

Can I use exactly the same link building methods for both pages?

It depends upon your pages content and importance........do optimize all the pages of your website with the relevant keywords .........as these pages might get a good ranking for a keyword............optimizing all the pages is a good strategy as they are also main parts of your website as they also hold the same impotance as your home page.........

I suggest you start with your landing page. If the keyword is very competitive for your page, target more easy keywords like long-tailed search terms that are still related. Then internal pages would be your next goal.

start promoting your home page, as if you would have noticed, free directories don't allow internal links. After that you should also go for internal pages as well.

Optimize your home page first and then your internal keywords.
Have a keyword research for your competitive keywords.
Follow social bookmarking to submit your internal pages
