is it better to market many sites VS. a few sites?

in the past I've seen some threads where a person
might have dozens of sites, upwards of 50 to 100

they are making (per their threads) anywhere between
$1 to $10 per site or with some sites higher or much higher

So that cumulatively they are making some fair or very
    good income.......

wouldn't that involve a lot more work ??? rather than focusing
on a few sites, maybe 10 or less???

I'm trying to understand the benefit of having so many sites
and from what I understand they aren't mini sites...
I don't know the balance of whether they are single page
    sites, or multipage sites...

anyone know why so many is better than a handful or
    a couple of handfuls???

    thank you

    AMF :)

Some people create Micro-Niche Sites. (Usually 5 pages) and attach AdSense or some other forms of advertising to them.
Google has cracked down on these sites as of May 2010 (Now referred to as the MayDay attacks)

The benefit in creating multiple sites is... Most sites will not make $1 a day.... but others might make $10 or more
It is a luck of the draw.

When you figure out which sites are working and which aren't, you duplicate the process and focus on only the sites that are producing.

Internet Marketing is a numbers game. If you keep throwing darts hopefully something will hit.
When you find the target, then you focus your energies there.

I never really understood that either but i would imagine that some sites just can't seem to generate traffic whether Google is the problem or maybe it's the site layout and design etc. So the logic is just pump out as many sites as possible and fill them all with content and see which ones can generate a little bit of traffic/money. The sites that are profitable will keep getting more work done to them and the sites that don't get any traffic might get tossed out or used for backlinks. If you own a bunch of sites you can continually link to all of your sites to increase your SEO.

Putting all of your attention to one website could be a little bit risky if google decides to change something with the sites search engine rankings or something, so having multiple sites also increases your long term success.

I always support having more than one site, because if you've only one site and if it become damaged (i.e. Hacked), you'll lose everything. Again, if you've more than one site, if one falls down another will replace your potential earning. Don't Forget the proverb:

"DON'T PUT ALL ODDS IN ONE BUSKET"

Well for me, I think it's good to handle and promote many sites to have more income but if you can't give much time to them or you can't manage them well, then I think it's better to handle a few sites.

Its better to work 1 big site, but building 50 to 100 micro sites in the same niche is a great way to help out that big site. It still would be considered part of the same campaign. Imagine if you have a site on the first page in google making you $100 a day. If you can do it once you can do it 2,3 times over again. You already have the blueprint you need to rank up another page for the same keyword terms. Adding another listing to the first page for your target keyword means you've just doubled your exposure.

Big Site is much better and has alot more potential. It's hard to focus on marketing multiple sites as well. Just make sure when you build a big site that you conduct effect research to ensure it's worth investing all your time into.

Why not both? Many big sites have the best potential for ROI :)

I agree, you get the best of both worlds. Just analyze your stats to improve efficiency.

I've heard that over time Google may be moving more towards authority sites. One expert I listened to said he was focusing on less sites with more content, but I'm sure they are many people who make good money on microsites. I think over time, bigger sites may be the way to go

Making multiple websites just divides your efforts. There is a snowball effect when it comes to Search Engine Rankings so you will want to focus on one main, authority domain; it may take more time than a couple mini sites but the ROI is worth it.

I personally don't think you can do a great job at marketing that many websites. I have about 5 and I barely have enough time to really do a halfway decent job on any of them. A lot of people who have that many sites are link building for the purpose of turning around and giving more link juice to their few "money making sites". Essentially, they are building a network. :)

I think in the long run, if you focus on one site, it has much more potential to be successful.

I would advocate thinking about providing a real consumer good (product or service) and pouring all of your energies into it. It will end up being your passion project and though it will suck up your time, it will be worth it. The payoff will also be much higher from a single winner than many mediocre sites.

If you are going to market many sites get ready to WORK... think about you build 50-100 mini sites.. you have to constantly provide unique content plus backlinks maintain the very first sites you built.. plus now your building other new sites.. it would never end...

i think it's best to have 1 main site which acts as your hub, and then possibly have many mini-sites which are all interlinked to your main site. Your focus should be on the main site though. Perhaps use your mini sites to improve the ranking of your main site
