    Hey

    Is it better to link exchange with same niche, or does it not matter?

    To gain better search engine positions, lets say you have a website about "Food", so it better to link exchange with high Pagerank website that are also FOOD related websites, or does it not matter?

    Can I link exchange with other high pagerank sites such as, "webhosting" or "coupons" sites to gain better search engine positions?

    It does matter alot if your exchanging the link with the person who has similar content as yours. make sure he has a do follow link of yours.

    It will be always better if you backlink is from the site in same niche since it helps more in ranking on the keyword

    A backlink from same niche website carries much more weight than a backlink from non-similar niche. But, both of them will count if they are nofollow.

    it will be helpful if you get link from same related content whether its a link exchange or a backlink as long as its dofollow

    Yes it do matter!!!
    Everylink you place on your site, Google will crawl over it ,
    If it do related and have high PR , it will help your SERP. If you also place your link there, it will become a quality backlink.

    You can set yourself for everylink you exchange to dofollow or nofollow. If you think those site you exchange will harm your SEO, then set it as nofollow and Google will not crawl over it.
