Curious what others think, is it better to let someone develop your .org .net if you have the .com? I know it's nice to protect your name but I have visited other large sites that say are a .net and always wonder who has the .com version and type it in, it's almost like free marketing for your site.
I have done it once or twice, but I don't think I have done it in years. If your name is copyrighted, I wouldn't allow it, but if it isn't, I wouldn't worry about it. Bill
I use to have this impression on "non-.com" domains but I'm not sure.. it is free marketing in a way (because of the name) but the topics are different.. it would seem like a copycat.. I wouldn't let them market the site for me. I would register the domain and forward them all to my .com because that way you have more control over your name
lol I laughed so hard at that remark it sounded so harsh in my head. I have to say that I've done it once or twice and when I buy a domain name the .com isnt avilable find myself quite annoyed and visit the .com in order to find out what is currently being held there. I dont think that past the registration process I have really given it another thought though.
Yeah that was my point I was trying to make. I might look at what the guy with .com of a domain I wanted has done with it. But you can you picture the average soccer mom going: "Ohh I see this is a .net site I am on, I wonder what kind of information the .com owner may have...." I just don't think it will happen. Now if you are talking about the 5 or 6 hits you may get extra from other web owners and that kind of traffic outweighs you losing some to the guy that develops the .net in the SERP's.....then by all means leave them out there for grabs....... (btw I didn't mean to be harsh)
I think the .com is critical for businesses. If you don't got the .com, you don't got much. .com is a must!
I usually grab all associated extensions when I register a name. And I try to stick with only .com's now.
I dont think thats true I see alot of big name sites that dont use .com. It isn't anything that I ever really paid too much attention to until I started making my own web sites and getting into web development.
I do grab the main ones that are avilable when ever I start up a new site if my budget is large enough, although even the likes of google don't do that so again I don't see it playing a major part in any success stories.
