Is it better to host my own blog or free blog?

From an SEO perspective, is it better to build and host a blog on my own site or to use a free Blog service from Yahoo? Basically, will my blog get crawled and indexed by the search engine spiders more frequently if I use a free blog from Yahoo than if I use WordPress and host my blog on my own site?

If you host your own, you have greater freedom to tweak design/content in SEO efforts

IMHO own blog is better, but what about links from the same server for example between blog domain and domain?

Hosting on your own could mean server hassles etc but it provides more freedom. While hosting on their servers provides 99% uptime and upgrades etc and its FREE :D

I think it is better to start using a free blog. If you start making money, you can then move to host your own blog and pay the hosting fess.

Free blogs (with subdomains) will likely rank faster (especially Google), although having your own domain will provide much more freedom and would probably be better in the longrun if your goal is to earn through it.

Start your own blog. Get a cheap hosting account for starters (will cost you from 2,99$ a month) and upgrade as the blog grows. Learn how to install a blog script and be sure that the time spent is worth the effort. Just concentrate on your own solution from the very beginning and you'll feel the pride as it groes. I wouldn't let the keys to my blog be owned by someone else just because they can host it for me, free. Managing a blog can take a week's learning curve if not less...

If you are just starting out, than i would reccomend a free blog. There are less hassles and you can be up and running within minutres. Once you get teh hang of things and have outgrown the free blog, you can move to hosting it on your own.

If he goes for the free blog, then he needs to learn the upgrade options at a later date when he decides to build his own. Will he be ok to start over, will he have to manually rebuild his blog articles or is there an export tool offered by the existing blog in order to take the blog data away with him. Layout & structure changes, existing user base export possibility are only a few points to consider...

I hate seeing blogs on free spaces - definately get your own webspace and get it running that way, this will also improve your SEO in the long term and make you and your blog look more professional.

Personally if I were to get a blog, I would host it at Yahoo, where my website is already hosted - but make sure I got my own domain for it. Yahoo has blogging options for all kinds of levels, including (if I'm not mistaken) a fully editable wordpress option. So you really don't need to choose: you can have both.

But wherever you host your blog: do get your own domain and make sure it's fully customizable. Even if you don't want to customize now, you probably will later.

Thanks for all the great responses. It sounds pretty unanimous that building and hosing your own blog gives you full control and is better in the long run. I think I'll install WordPress today.

I'm all about being in full control which is why I lease a dedicated Windows/Exchange 2003 server from a large hosting company. This allows me unlimited web sites, email accounts, etc., for a fixed monthly fee.

Thanks again for all the great responses.

exactly what i was about to say.. ;)

i would also want to add that if you have your own domain, the blog will look more 'professional' and give a better 'impression' ;)

personally, i'd go for my own domain...

definitely, it will be better to host your own blog since there are limitations in a free blog. as they say you have more freedom if you host your own. :)
