I think you should submit to few hundreds and then as time permits go for the others also... there is no harm but not much benefit also in submitting to dead directories

I would not recommend submitting to 2000 directories at once. Go for quality rather than quantity, although high PR does often does not mean high quality. Look out for new directories using dropped domains.

I'd look for directories in your niche first. Then move on to some of the better known general directories. If you're interested in high pr directories here's a list. You can use the search on the site to narrow the list by price, PR, niche, etc.

Another thing to look for is number of indexed pages in a directory. It is beneficial if your link is on an indexed page.

in 2011, directories will have no importance in SEO. As we all know, majority of directories charge money to get listed. So avoid them

I'd go for the big ones right off the bat, then slowly submit the other ones, you want to capture the one that has the most traffic at first

I suggest you to give more important to social bookmark site rather then directories link submission. No one can approve your free link every one just need money for approve link on directories.

I think start with the ones who approves your links fast, it doesn;t matter at starting if its a high pr one or not and then plan accordingly.

It's better to use 2,000 high quality directories :)
But seriously - the quality will always win the quantity. Seek ye first high-quality directories, at the same time a high PR is good but not always sufficient condition for such directories.

Mine in my sig you can sort the directories by PR.

Thats a bold statement, I didn't see Google excluding directories in their caffeine update, in fact Google approves of quality directories. If you have some compelling evidence of this please share it with us, then we can can close all our directories and put up parking pages instead.
