    Two words : Post count.

DP is completely over run with ppl trying to get over 1k post so they too can be a "trusted and valued member" that you can do business with.

I have the feeling that DP needs a few more moderators since there are so many active users (usually out of control)
But sorry we should probably take this outside of this thread

No im not interested in increasing my post count, becasue it means nothing to me... I have worse things to worry about than a number by a fake alias of me on the internet... I am however running against the clock since my school shuts of the internet nightly at 11pm (EST) so all I'm trying to do is help people, in the little time I have...

Also try to be a little nicer to the newer members, a warm welcome tends to promote forum growth...

Stick around, Recon. It can only be good for you : )

You should be aware, though, that when you make a web page you really need to look at it in all the popular browsers. You may not see any problems with .png on your browser, but if most or ever just "a lot" of people are using IE6 and looking at your site, they will see that ugly grey background on each of your pngs.

Cause older Windows doesn't support it; because they are surfing at a school, office, library or workplace where they are not allowed to change their browsers; as much as I'd love everyone to upgrade to just about anything else, there are cases where people just can't. Paul O'Brien's got some clients running some old system they paid a lot of money for, for their business, which leaves them stuck with IE5.5. Paul builds their sites also for IE5.5 so they can see their own sites the same as everyone else in the world.

The non-javascript answer someone posted works with ActiveX. It's not something I would rely on if I were using it to avoid Javascript, since I find it likely that someone with JS disabled would have AX disabled as well. Probably the .htc file is best, since it will actually still work when Javascript's disabled on the client end (not sure about the firewall issue though).

You are not coding for yourself and your views.... You are coding to give the user an enjoyable experience.

The view that we should not code to ensure users with IE 5.x -6.x get an enjoyable experience is totally insane.

We don't have to love IE, but we have to love our users that use IE.

I personally would prefer to code something that works on all browsers and then i can sleep at night knowing the 30+% of visitors that still use IE5.x-6.x are happily buying my stuff and clicking my ads.......

I think some people could use a bit of clarification on the transparency issue. IE6 supports transparency in GIFs and PNG-8 images. I use both quite often. If you are using Photoshop, to save as a PNG-8, go to File>Save For Web. Then you can select which file type you want it saved as.

Now for further clarification, IE6 does not support partial transparency, it is either transparent or it is not. Partial transparent shadows, fades and gradients do not work in IE6.

^True, Foo. In this case, though, I saw that this guy couldn't use a gif because the shadows were indeed partial transparency-- if the background didn't have a texture he could totally fake it with a partial-colour matte background (by background I mean outline). With the textured body background, he could still do it, but the header logo would then have to match up pretty good positionally to the body background.

I found a code to allow the transparency of a PNG in IE5 an 6. I think it would be extremely hard to line up the page backgrounds and the picture backgrounds. Then you have to take into account for the page looking different in Firefox ect.

Its not the PNG file slowing down my page, it is the ebay ads. IE forces everything in a table to load first.

browsers? are you telling me there is more internetz than internet explorer?

totally jk, definitely use .png's with the fix, a prettier website makes a better impression and gets more returning visitors.. (unless your into that whole 'ugly sells stuff' lol ;))
