I built a website that has a pattern in the background and I wanted the logo to have a transparent background. I used a .png for the logo of www.leftystrats.com . Do pretty much all broswers support png files now? GIF's did not provide enough detail.
You can either use the Javascript which was mentioned (called PNGfix) OR you can likely get away with a gif for this one, just give it a blueish matte background and THEN remove the background for transparency. You'll only see the little bit of blue if the logo sits on a pure white background. I only see a few colours on the text. Normally that's the main problem of gif's is that they can't hold as many colours as pngs. *Edit: nevermind, I see what you mean-- the shadows can only be done with PNG because you've got pixels with partial transparencies. So, you'll have to go with the JS.
As it as been told, IE6 does not support PNG transparency, but it can be fixed. Web developers who work with PNG files can use the AlphaImageLoader filter
I would use a .png. My view is that if IE does not choose to be standards compliant, then webmasters shouldn't go out of their way to support them.
Of course no one would notice if you're working on small sites, but if you ever get to the big sites clients will start complaining, and you'll have no choice but to support them. I hope the user base for IE6 decreases dramatically when IE8 comes out, so in 2-3 years we won't have to support it.
You just love telling people to upgrade to IE, dont you "Hey honey, my water just broke!" "Why not just upgrade to IE? Kidding
I pray no one on this forum uses ie6 as their primary browser. And to answer your question, it's because most people on this earth don't even know there's more than one browser, they think IE is the internet, they don't know how to upgrade.
You don't need to use javascript actually http://geoland.org/2007/03/transparent-pngs-in-ie-without-javascript/ Crazase but you definitely need to use a workaround since your logo shows a grey background in IE6 instead of a transparent one
I use .png for my sites, though I have heard that it has some incompatabilities with some older browsers... I have not encountered any on my own.
well if you took the time to read one or two posts before posting for increasing your post count, you would have found out which those browsers are
Yep. I swear, some DP members don't know how to read at all, could gain some knowledge posted by the more experienced... yet they continue to reply with novice insight.
