Is it against ICANN policy to register 2 letters domains ?

I registered a two letter domain on 27th December 2006. After one year and four months ISP realized the domain was sold by mistake. They said it was registered by an error and it's against ICANN policy to register my domain co.mv so they will cancel it on 1st June 2008.

What do you guys say about this ? I appreciate help I get from DP

I have already setup a blog to announce the case. Here is the link

It depends on the domain extension, I register one and two letter domains with Dot To. I guess they may want to keep co.mv as it is similar to co.uk and can be used for sub domains selling, thats why they are cancelling your registration. It is a superb domain for subdomains.

Very simple list down a few of the 2 letter domains, I usually visit www.xe.com there is certainly many others. Also ask them to quote which paragraph of ICANN disallow 2 letter characters. I guess they are keen to cover their mistake and keep a valuable domain and are offering a ridiculous excuse. There are quite a number of two letter domains available live on the Internet.

It seems fishy to me... If there is really such restriction then it should have been applied at the time of registration (automatically), not a year and a half later.

.mv is a ccTLD not a TLD to be the responsibility of ICANN

You're talking about a ccTLD... different ball game. You'd have to contact the registry. Why would you reg a domain through your ISP and not a registrar?

Do whatever it takes to make sure you are being treated fairly. ccTLDs are a PIA.

After reading your blog post, I'd say you should keep contacting the registry and see if you could find any other 2L.MV domain owners and see if they received anything in the mail.

I'd say this is the most likely explanation to be honest.

Sounds bogus. Do some research as suggested and see if you can find some other 2 letter .mv domains.

I am sure they will! But I guess they did not think of that when they first launch. Fight to keep the domain, do not let them just take it away from you with some vague reasons.

You may need to seek out legal advice in this matter from a qualified attorney.

For such a good name it is certainly worth the fees, look at co.uk, you can basically setup a business selling name.co.mv.

In the right hands it would be great for a tld. That's why Dhiraagu wants it.
