Internal linking will help your main pagerank pass down. But the bigger point is that it will make indexing so much easier for Google

You can get a similar effect if you name the image correctly. Use whatever anchor text you would have used i.e. anchor-text.jpg and also be sure to use alternative text in the image link i.e. alt="anchor text here".

I also recommend linking at least one keyword to your home page from each blog post or article you write.
That way if a scraper comes along and snags your article you gain a link to your site.
